Recycling has become a common practice in the United States. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, as of 2012 Americans were recycling almost 35 percent of the solid waste they generated, in the process diverting almost 89 million tons of trash from landfills. Despite this success, homeowners still encounter lots of misinformation about acceptable recycling practices, partly because recycling guidelines have evolved over the years and partly because the rules vary slightly by region.
